I dont know how it was possible but I actually managed to drag my sorry butt out of bed for the Sun run in the early morning of April 19th. Due to a bit too much wine drinking the night before I wasnt feeling on top of my game. The night before I had been invited to an evening of over indulgence where manicures, pedicures and massages were available. It was a night for mums wonderfully hosted by another mum and believe me we all indulged.
Unfortunatley I had such a good time I paid for it the next morning. It was a mad rush to orient myself, dress myself, wake up and prepare the baby and race over to West Vancover to drop him off at his grandmothers before continuing on my journey to the Sun run race. I surprisingly managed to arrive downtown by 8am and find free parking down near Cardero's restaurant. At this point I decided I had time for a much needed power nap and found myself falling into a deep and drooling sleep.
Half an hour later my watch alarm successfully jolted me awake, the drool went flying and it took me a few seconds to remember where I was and what I was about to do. Unfortunately I never found the group I was meeting up with and squeezed my way to the front of the first wave where we were situated just behind the elites. This is the place you want to be to avoid the long waits just to get over the start line.
After a few minutes we were off and the crowd wasnt too bad. I found that this year I didnt need to weave around people so much and I could actually move my arms without poking someone with my elbows. It took me a few kilometers to get into a good pace but the people running around me and the live bands along the way managed to motivate and drive me. My method is to pick someone ahead to catch up to then once I have passed them I pick another person to catch up to. It helps to push me along.
My time at the end was 47minutes (not my personal) but due to my current physical state I guess it wasn't too bad. The lessons to be learned from my race are:
